1955 - Miles - The New Miles Davis Quintet @ 320

Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet is an album recorded on 15 November 1955 by Miles Davis, for Prestige Records. As the name suggests, it was the first to feature his now-famous "first great quintet" (though in fact they had recorded a session for Columbia Records three weeks earlier, eventually released on the album 'Round About Midnight). The album is often known as Miles, since that is the only word on the cover. As with the other albums recorded for Prestige the following year, the quintet was playing familiar material in a fairly straightforward manner. Coltrane does not play on "There is No Greater Love".

Performers:

Miles Davis - Trumpet

John Coltrane - Tenor saxophone

Philly Joe Jones - Drums

Red Garland - Piano

Paul Chambers - Bass

1957 - Miles Ahead - Japanese Import (SICP 1202 Japan) @ 320

Miles Ahead is a cool jazz album by Miles Davis released in 1957. This was the first album after "Birth of the Cool" that Davis recorded with Gil Evans, with whom he would go on to release albums such as Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain. Gil Evans combined the ten pieces that make up the album in a kind of suite, each following the preceding one without interruption. Davis is the only soloist on Miles Ahead, which also features a prominent horn section.

Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud is an album by jazz musician Miles Davis. It was recorded at Le Poste Parisien Studio in Paris on December 4 and 5, 1957. The album is the soundtrack to the 1958 Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud.

Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis for creating the film's soundtrack - possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet's recording for Roger Vadim's Sait-on jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957.

1958 - Miles Davis At Newport @ 320

At the 1958 Newport Festival, Miles Davis was leading one of his most celebrated groups: a sextet consisting of John Coltrane (tenor sax), Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). This same lineup would record Kind of Blue within a year. The results here aren't quite as magical. Coltrane, at the peak of his sheets-of-sound period, is incredible -- he tears through the songs with ferocity. Just listen to "Two Bass Hit". Bill Evans, on the other hand, sounds a little out of place on the bop tunes that compose the bulk of this set; his reflective, abstract playing doesn't fit in as well in this context. Adderley and Davis play well though I wouldn't call this performance a milestone for either one. The sextet also tackle a few of the tunes a bit faster than they can handle, and they bungle the theme to "Ah Leu Cha". But this is still a very good recording of a great group, and worth buying for the hardcore Davis aficionado.

1958 - Milestones @ 320

Milestones is an album recorded in February and March 1958 by Miles Davis. It is renowned for including Miles' first forays into the developing modal jazz experiments, as noticed on the piece "Miles" (renamed 'Milestones'), which would be followed to its logical conclusion on Kind of Blue. Furthermore, the playing of his sextet, which featured Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane contributing on such tracks as "Straight No Chaser", have induced it to be highly regarded by jazz musicians, fans and critics alike. It was also the last time the rhythm section of Jones, Garland and Chambers would ever play with Miles on record.

Coltrane returned to Davis’s group in 1958, contributing to the “modal phase” albums Milestones (1958) and Kind of Blue (1959), both considered essential examples of 1950s modern jazz. Davis at this point was experimenting with modes—i.e., scale patterns other than major and minor.

Kind of Blue is a jazz album by musician Miles Davis, released August 17, 1959, on Columbia Records, in both mono and stereo, CL1355 and CS8163. Recording sessions took place at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in March and April of 1959. As of January 16, 2002, it has been certified triple platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America. Though precise figures have been disputed, Kind of Blue has been cited as Davis' best-selling album, and as the best-selling jazz record of all time. It is also regarded by many as the greatest jazz album of all time and ranks at or near the top of many "best album" lists in disparate genres. In 2002, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. In 2003, the album was ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

1961 - Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall @ 320

This was a great and underrated Davis ensemble. The fact that they were playing some of the innovative pieces of the Gil Evans/Davis era with full orchestral accompaniment and in a live setting (and with acoustics of Carnegie Hall no less) should have made for a mounumental recording. As a historic document, it's a must-have: the playing is without reservation, first rate. But then, the sound. Even with remastering, you can't fix mike overload, and it is there often, and most specifically on Miles' principal mike of all places. At best the high dyanmics make for a rough sound, almost frayed and thready in its texture. Anyone used to listening to overmiked recordings, especially live ones from the 30's and 40's can deal with this, and enjoy it, if you like a rough, electric timbre to your trumpet sound. But at worst it's just full-blown distortion, distracting and disappointing and would have been so if any other instrument or player was playing in any other venue, whether Carnegie Hall or your cousin's wedding reception at the Elks Club. And this after all, IS Miles Davis, and this IS Carnegie Hall. Me, I can live with the sonic shortcomings; the performace, the occasion, and the lineup are all too important not to. But it's really a shame; this could have been, all around, one of the finest recordings, live or in studio, of Miles' career. As it is-- well, I have it playing now. So there you go.

1963 - Miles Davis In Europe @ 320

Recorded live in France at the Festival Mondial, du Jazz Antibes, Miles Davis in Europe captures trumpeter Miles Davis in late 1963. While Four & More and My Funny Valentine -- both taken from the same 1964 New York Philharmonic Hall concert -- are most often cited as this lineup's essential live recording, Miles Davis in Europe is a no less exciting listen. The band, including tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams, had recorded Seven Steps to Heaven a few months earlier, which would turn out to be the one studio album Davis would make with the lineup. Already, the band's adventurous, avant-garde leanings are on display with the young Williams propelling Davis to scorching heights on the fast swinger "Milestones." Similarly, Hancock helps turn the standard "I Thought About You" into an impressionistic and free-flowing ballad allowing Davis to spread wide swaths of tonal color and deep note bends across the stage. Although Coleman would depart the group in less than a year, he proves himself here to be a muscular, keen improviser who deserved more attention than he got at the time.

1963 - Seven Steps To Heaven (Reissue) @ 320

Seven Steps to Heaven is an album recorded in 1963 by Miles Davis. On the 16th and 17th of April, a quintet comprising Davis, George Coleman, Victor Feldman, Ron Carter and Frank Butler recorded all six tunes plus "Summer Night", for an album to be titled So Near, So Far. A month later, Davis re-recorded three of the tunes (tracks 2, 4 & 6) with a new quintet, replacing Feldman with Herbie Hancock and Butler with Tony Williams. The new rhythm section of Hancock, Carter and Williams would form the nucleus of Davis's working band for the next five years. This is the last of Davis's studio albums which relies substantially on standard tunes - once Wayne Shorter joined the quintet in 1964, tunes on studio recordings were almost always composed by members of the group.

1954 - Blue Haze @ 320

Blue Haze is an album recorded in 1953 and 1954 by Miles Davis, for Prestige Records. The first track on the album is from the 3 April 1954 session which resulted in half of the album Walkin' (and was originally included on the 10" vinyl version of that album). The remainder is the result of two sessions on 19 May 1953 and 15 March 1954, the first being a quintet with John Lewis, Charles Mingus (on piano, not bass), Percy Heath and Max Roach, and the second a quartet with Horace Silver, Heath, and Art Blakey. Tracks 2 and 7 are wrongly credited as Davis compositions - they are both in fact by Eddie Vinson. However, Vinson supposedly wrote these tunes for Davis, and this is probably how the confusion has occurred.

Tracks:

1. I'll Remember April 7:52
2. Four 4:00
3. Old Devil Moon 3:22
4. Smooch 3:04
5. Blue Haze 6:08

★★好东西★★Miles Davis--不完全全集3

On 11 May and 26 October 1956, Miles Davis went into the studio with his core quintet and laid down tracks that were released as four different albums:

1957 - Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet

1957 - Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet

1959 - Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet

1961 - Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet

The Personnel on these four albums:

Miles Davis - Trumpet

John Coltrane - Tenor saxophone

Philly Joe Jones - Drums

Red Garland - Piano

Paul Chambers - Bass

Many jazz fans of the era and of present day considered this to be the best small combo ever in jazz music. Not only did they improve as a unit while they were together but each member benefited individually from the association. Miles found an incentive to play again and reached new heights because of the musical environment he had created in choosing his sidemen. The sidemen, in turn, flowered in the climate of the Davis latitude. By the beginning of 1957 Coltrane had broken the shackles of self-doubt and breathed freely into his singing horn. Garland had recorded successfully as a trio pianist (A Garland of Red) and the Chambers-Jones duo was fused into the most powerful of pulses.

In essence, what you are hearing is a portion of the group's repertoire. Some have been recorded before by Miles but with different personnel. This is similar to the way bands used to record. I do not refer to the calling of tunes as in a set but the idea of recording numbers that have been in the book for a while, ones with which the musicians are completely at home. I'm sure this had a lot to do with the great string of records that Count Basie made for Decca in the Thirties and although a small group has less difficulty in "shedding" an arrangement, the benefits they reap from experience of playing a piece on the job for several months prior to recording it, are unmistakable.

1964 - Miles in Tokyo (Japanese Import) @ 320

Recorded in '64, Miles in Tokyo finds the iconic Miles Davis performing with his almost-second great quintet. Tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, a more accomplished and daring experimentalist than his predecessor, George Coleman, joined the group after a fellow Bostonian, drummer Tony Williams, recommended him to Davis. There are times on this recording when one might understand why Davis and Rivers never meshed, and times when the partnership is quite wonderful, though brief.

Miles Davis: trumpet

Sam Rivers: tenor saxophone

Herbie Hancock: piano

Ron Carter: bass

Tony Williams: drums

1964 - My Funny Valentine @ 320

My Funny Valentine is a 1964 live album by Miles Davis. It was recorded at a concert at the Lincoln Center, New York, on February 12, 1964.

The concert was part of a series of benefits staged at the recently-built Philharmonic Hall (now known as the Avery Fisher Hall), co-sponsored by the NAACP, the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Davis's set that night was ostensibly in support of voter registration in Mississippi and Louisiana, but he also mentioned in a Melody Maker interview that one of the concerts was in memory of John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated the previous year. Kennedy's death had struck at the hopes of many in the Civil Rights movement, a cause dear to Miles, who had expressed his admiration for the President in 1962: "I like the Kennedy brothers; they're swinging people."

Two albums were assembled from the concert recording. The up-tempo pieces were issued as Four & More, while My Funny Valentine consists of the slow and medium-tempo numbers. Davis biographer Ian Carr notes that the former were "taken too fast and played scrappily," whilst the Funny Valentine pieces "were played with more depth and brilliance than Miles had achieved before." He goes on to laud the album as "one of the very greatest recordings of a live concert … The playing throughout the album is inspired, and Miles in particular reaches tremendous heights. Anyone who wanted to get a vivid idea of the trumpeter's development over the previous eight years or so should compare [earlier recordings of "My Funny Valentine" and "Stella by Starlight"] with the versions on this 1964 live recording."

Track listing

1. My Funny Valentine (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart) – 15:03

2. All of You (Cole Porter) – 14:57

1967 - Nefertiti @ 320

Nefertiti is an album recorded in June and July 1967 by the second Miles Davis quintet and is the group's last fully acoustic album. Davis himself does not contribute anything in the way of compositions. The album is best known for the unusual title track, on which the horn section repeats the melody numerous times without individual solos while the rhythm section improvises underneath, reversing the traditional role of rhythm section. Also featured are the lilting ballad "Fall", Williams's "Hand Jive", a more boppish composition, and the other pieces showcase the group's unique post-bop approach.

The album reached number 8 in the U. S. Jazz Album charts on Billboard in 1968.

Both "Nefertiti" and "Riot" entered the Davis quintet's live book.

Davis and Shorter drift in and out of unison on the title track, a sound which inspired Joni Mitchell to pursue a similar effect on her 1976 album Hejira.

1968 - Miles In The Sky @ 320

Miles in the Sky is an album recorded in January and May 1968 by the Miles Davis quintet. It is notable for the first use of electric piano and electric guitar on an issued recording by Davis, a foreshadowing of his move into fusion music over the next few years.

1970 - Bitches Brew @ 320

Bitches Brew is an album recorded by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis in 1969 and released in 1970. It is also the name of a piece included in this album.

Recorded over the course of three days (August 19–August 21, 1969), Bitches Brew incorporated electric instruments, such as electric piano and guitar, and mostly rejected traditional jazz rhythms in favor of a looser, rock-influenced improvisational style.

The two-disc set contains mostly very long tracks, improvisations on pieces that were largely written in the studio, though substantially edited and rearranged afterwards.

Some jazz fans and musicians felt the album was crossing the limits, or was not jazz at all. One critic writes that "Davis drew a line in the sand that some jazz fans have never crossed, or even forgiven Davis for drawing." Bob Rusch recalls, "this to me was not great Black music, but I cynically saw it as part and parcel of the commercial crap that was beginning to choke and bastardize the catalogs of such dependable companies as Blue Note and Prestige.… I hear it 'better' today because there is now so much music that is worse."

On the other hand, many fans, critics, and musicians see the records as an important, vital release. In a 1997 interview, drummer Bobby Previte sums up his feelings about Bitches Brew: "Well, it was groundbreaking, for one. How much groundbreaking music do you hear now? It was music that you had that feeling you never heard quite before. It came from another place. How much music do you hear now like that?" The Penguin Guide to Jazz gives Bitches Brew a four-star rating (out of a possible four stars), describing the recording as "one of the most remarkable creative statements of the last half-century, in any artistic form. It is also profoundly flawed, a gigantic torso of burstingly noisy music that absolutely refuses to resolve itself under any recognized guise." In 2003, the album was ranked number 94 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Bitches Brew is often called the best-selling jazz record. Such sales figures have been disputed, but it was Davis's first gold record, selling more than half a million copies. Eleven years earlier, however, Davis had released Kind of Blue, another groundbreaking record that has been cited as perhaps the best-selling jazz release. In 1998, Columbia Legacy/Sony Music released The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions, a four-disc box set that included Bitches Brew as well as ensuing studio sessions through February 1970.

1971 - Live Evil @ 320

Live-Evil is an album by Miles Davis, part of which was recorded live at The Cellar Door on December 19, 1970, and part of which was recorded in Columbia's Studio B, with different personnel on February 6, June 3, 4, 1970. Though all compositions were originally credited to Miles Davis, the studio recordings "Little Church" ("Igrejinha") and "Nem Um Talvez" ("Not Even a Maybe") are by Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, who also played with the Davis band for his tunes. Davis had originally intended the album to be a spiritual successor to Bitches Brew, but this idea was abandoned when it became obvious that Live-Evil was "something completely different.

1974 - Big Fun @ 320

Big Fun is a double album recorded between 1969 and 1972 by Miles Davis. It was released on April 19, 1974 as a double LP. Largely ignored on its original release, its 2001 extended reissue proves that the album was underappreciated.

Big Fun's main musical flavor is an Indian-tinged jazz-rock, often incorporating sitar, tambura, tabla, and other Indian instruments.

Most of the tracks were recorded during the 1969-1970 Complete Bitches Brew Sessions, plus "Go Ahead John" from the 1970 Tribute to Jack Johnson sessions, and "Ife" from the 1972 On the Corner sessions.

The original LP and its four side-long cuts was at the time largely ignored, or dismissed as filler material. The later CD reissue, and its four additional tracks, got more attention and respect, making it considered an underappreciated album.

Recollections, which is a reworking of Joe Zawinul's "In a Silent Way" was used in the film, Finding Forrester.

"Lonely Fire" was used as a sample in Notorious BIG's track "Suicidal Thoughts" on his album Ready to Die.

1975 - Agharta @ 320

Like the most challenging music out there, this album is both a blessing and a headache. For musicians and jazz aficionados it's a, ever-changing stew of grooves, rhythms and blows to get lost in; for those more accustomed to the easy stylings of Miles's first quintet and the like, this is no more difficult a listen than an hour of jackhammering outside the window. Miles himself doesn't show the easy, soothing playing that made him famous in the first place; he sounds clipped, ragged and mad at the world. Considering that he had hip problems and had previously broken both legs in an accident, this might not be far from the truth.

His band might not have been quite as angry, but they still played with the same divine fire. The double-percussion team of Foster and Mtume lay down one dense African groove after another full of rhythms so thick you could wade through them; Cosey and Lucas bend their six-strings to some of the most primal wails this side of Hendrix; Henderson provides just the anchor on bass that everyone needs. Playing opposite Miles on sax was Sonny Fortune, and while he's no Wayne Shorter (but who could be?) he lays down a couple solos that I'm still trying to get my head around after a year of listening. The music was largely improvised and loosely sketched out, but rooted in some previous Davis sounds. "Maiysha" shows up in the track list, but I also hear pieces of "Right Off" and "Ife" among others. You'd probably have to be familiar with his entire body of work from this period to catch them all.

By the time of the two final concerts documented on Agharta and its counterpart Pangaea, Miles and crew had become a well-oiled machine, adept at weaving rock, jazz and funk into a head-spinning jungle brew that still confuses and amazes listeners 27 years later. It's jazz taken in a direction no one else had gone; it's a batch of hot rock grooves with tribal rhythmic underpinnings; it's the angry burning of a man in pain and a top-notch crew flourishing under his direction. And this show is only the Jekyll to Pangaea's Hyde; the later concert was even darker, heavier and closer to chaos. I'd recommend Agharta first of the two, but if you haven't heard any electric Miles it may be easier to start with B-Brew or Jack Johnson first. Agharta is a trip through the dense African bush, not for the faint of heart but those who love a good challenge.

1975 - Pangaea @ 320

Pangaea, a spectacular 1975 release, was the last album Miles Davis recorded before retiring from music for five years.

He was running on empty, his failing health made worse by drugs and drink. In a sense, this double disc is an 88-minute primal scream, as Davis spews forth his pain, tempering it with the melodic gifts he's always possessed.

From 1970's Bitches Brew on, Davis had been baffling and annoying jazz purists and critics with his increasingly electric, rock 'n' roll-influenced sound. But his self-avowed desire to draw a young, black audience was foiled by his own music -- Miles Davis records were too weird, atonal and jazzy for rock and R&B fans. So, his albums from this era were initially unpopular. Many weren't even released outside of Japan until recently.

Pangaea is truly scorched-earth music, thorny and apocalyptic, with influences as diverse as Sly Stone and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

And the rock influence is strong: bassist Michael Henderson had just come from playing with Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder, guitarists Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas were noisy electric players, and drummer Al Foster played backbeats like a man possessed.

That's how Pangaea opens -- with Foster's heavy, fast rock beat. The guitars come in next, snarling in anticipation of Miles' entry. When he makes his appearance, nearly two minutes into the piece, he's playing through a wah-wah pedal, slowly mutating the tone of his trumpet into almost vocal tones.

It's a bizarre sound, but somehow retains Miles' classic simple lyricism. Further into the piece, at about the six-minute mark, the rhythm section drops out completely in the middle of a raging Sonny Fortune sax solo. Fortune keeps blowing on, and the beat comes back, just as ferocious, but at half-time. Fortune adapts his solo to the new beat, and the juggernaut rolls on.

That exchange is just one example of what Davis' septet acheived here. It's a truly organic form of rock 'n' roll jazz, where the entire face of the music can change through one musician's gesture -- a synergy latter-day jamsters like Phish or Rusted Root can only dream of.

Though the two pieces on Pangaea are long (40 minutes-plus) they still seem like windows onto something even larger -- this music feels like it could go on forever.

1983 - Star People @ 320

This is oddly unavailable on CD in the US (Columbia/Sony: why?) but is, possibly, the consistently strongest effort of Miles' last "comeback". Driven by guitarists, blues/funk inspired, and there's no Cyndy Lauper or Michael Jackson pop filler. Some arranging is by Gil Evans, some by Marcus Miller, stretching his wings as Miles' music director. Scofield's phrasing is so far behind the beat it's like he's mailing it in. Lotsa fun, if not the earthshaking mind-boggling music Miles made in the 60's and 70's.

"Cheeseballs In Cowtown" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.

Having spent the last five years touring and recording with his virtuoso electric ensemble, the Flecktones, banjo innovator Bela Fleck has created a concept album that celebrates his many musical friends and influences, in a homey setting. TALES FROM THE ACOUSTIC PLANET, an elegant, immaculately produced aural novella, is something of a homecoming dance for Bela--and surely the most ambitious, satisfying portrait yet of Fleck as a composer and arranger.

In exploring connections and defying conventions, TALES FROM THE ACOUSTIC PLANET presents an open-ended suite, drawing upon Fleck's roots in bluegrass, jazz, folk, country, pop and world music--eschewing hot licks in ...

Master jazz pianist Chick Corea, who's influenced modern music for 40 years, and premiere banjoist Béla Fleck, who's taken bluegrass into wildly new realms, celebrate the music of their recent CD Enchantment. With a combined total of 20 Grammys, this eminent duo gets crankin' when bluegrass and jazz intertwine in rippling cascades. Fleck first heard his hero Chick Corea's band Return to Forever in the '70s and recast some of that genius into his own bands New Grass Revival and The Flecktones. Corea's brilliant experimentation over the years, from his early days with Miles Davis to his hard-hitting Elektric Band, his work with synthesizers, jazz fusion and forays into classical music, now includes this astonishing union of divergent musical traditions. The result? An exuberant testament not only to daring new styles, but to the boundless creativity of these two musical giants.

Additional personnel: Dave Matthews (vocals); Sam Bush (fiddle); Paul McCandless (soprano saxophone); Jeff Coffin (alto saxophone).

Beyond the droll title there indeed lies some of the finest material these jazz-bluegrass cross-pollinators have ever recorded. This compilation documents the Bela Fleck & The Flecktones from their start as a trio in 1990 up to their expanded lineup on 1998's LEFT OF COOL, culling the cream of the albums in between. The avant-banjo virtuoso himself sheds some light on the inspiration for each song by including track-by-track annotations in the booklet.

GREATEST HITS begins on the same auspicious note as did the band's popularity, with the Grammy-winning instrumental "The Sinister Minister." It's a mysterious, quirky tune that creeps and crawls to Howard Levy's haunting harmonica playing. Two previously unissued tracks are included, with "Shocktime" surely being one of the more mind-blowing examples of the musicianship at hand. Originally intended to be on THREE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, this cut shines a welcome spotlight on Victor Wooten's ebullient, jaw-dropping bass pyrotechnics. "Road House Blues" funks from the Mississippi Delta to the Big Apple with a down-home combo of Bela Fleck on slide-banjo and Jeff Coffin's alto sax grooves.

The album title came from an audience member who suggested "Flight of the Codeine Hippo" as a name for the title track. The band changed "codeine" to "cosmic" to avoid the drug association.

"The Star Spangled Banner" was arranged and recorded in response to the Gulf War.

"Jekyll and Hyde (and Ted and Alice)" refers to the novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as well as the film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.

Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten formed Béla Fleck and the Flecktones in 1988, rounded out with harmonica player Howard Levy and Wooten's percussionist brother Roy "Future Man" Wooten, who plays synthesizer-based percussion. Levy left the group in 1992, making the band a trio until Saxophonist Jeff Coffin joined the group with the 1998 album Left of Cool.

With the Flecktones, Fleck has been nominated for and won several Grammy awards.
